Avalon Dojo
Hoshin Dojo Avalon is a friendly school with about 120 students. Much emphasis is placed on the moral side of martial arts. Without a reason behind what we are studying, martial arts is just mindless violence. We run some of the best children's martial arts programs in the country, with attention to manners, good sportsmanship, responsibility, self esteem and trustworthiness.
Our classes are fun, with a high standard of discipline and respect. We do not gain respect with fear, we laugh, play games and have fun, and learn about the important skills listed above through role playing, telling stories and of course, martial arts skills.
We differ from other Hoshin dojos in that our programs concentrate more on "ukemi", or rolling and falling skills, along with a life skills and manners program that all students must complete before moving up to the Fire Dragons, or teenage classes.
Teenage students participate in "teen camp", a special coming of age ceremony to celebrate their joining of the adult classes and becoming young adults.
Avalon dojo also offers comprehensive Adult programs, with our famous "red belt challenge" now in its tenth year. Adult classes are enjoyable and relaxed, and you will find many different ages and levels of fitness training together in them. Men and Women are always welcome to come and train with our friendly group.
All Avalon classes have a fitness component to ensure the health of our students. If you aren't fit you certainly cannot fight and protect yourself.
Mission Statement
Hoshin Dojo Avalon is a place where everyone is welcomed as a friend, a place where everyone can be themselves, a place where each person can feel safe and included.
The dojo is a place of happiness, learning and joy, with respect for all living things
Because every person is different, we celebrate our diversity as a chance for everyone to learn and grow from each other.
We recognize that many students who come to Hoshin Dojo Avalon are experiencing bullying, loneliness, learning or self esteem issues of some kind.
As instructors we recognize it is our role to guide students and families to the best possible solutions to the difficulties they are experiencing.
We believe all students regardless of their circumstances are able to easily uphold the ideals of the dojo and we look for and believe in this capability in every single student.
Because we never know who could be having a hard time in their lives, we treat each other with extra kindness in the Dojo and we try to take this thought with us wherever we go.
Our highest goal is for Hoshin students to learn to stand up for themselves, take responsibility for their choices, speak their truth confidently and take their place as valuable and wanted members of the community.
